In 2006, Jordin Sparks won second place in the 2006 Drug Free AZ Superstar Search.In 2006, Sparks was one of six winners who won the Phoenix Torrid search for the “Next Plus Size Model.” She was flown to California, where she was used in a number of Torrid ads and promotional pieces. A full-page ad for Torrid featuring Sparks ran in the December 2006 issue of Seventeen magazine.

Sparks appeared on the 2007 broadcast of American Idol, earning a “gold ticket” and the right to appear in the Hollywood Round. American Idol judge Randy Jackson made the offhand prediction that, “Curly hair will win this year,” which he admitted wasn’t Sparks. Before going on to American Idol, she had won Arizona Idol.

"I hate to choose because they are all good and I don't want to discourage any of them, but based on what happened last week I think David Cook has a good chance of being the last one standing.

"He sang the heck out of 'Billie Jean.' I didn't even know it was 'Billie Jean' when he started the song. I think that is a good example of taking a risk and it paying off. It is really hard because they want you to take risks, and the judges ream you if you don't, but they also often come after you when you take one they didn't like.

"A lot can change from week to week. Voters have short-term memories, so if David blows it next week he could go home and I'd have to pick a new favorite. It is so unpredictable."
